Hospitals
Toronto is home to more than 30 hospitals, including leading academic medical centers and highly specialized institutions. Many of these facilities operate within large healthcare networks that span multiple locations across the city.
As a premier global destination for health innovation, Toronto’s life sciences ecosystem stands as North America’s largest urban research cluster, anchored by the world-renowned Discovery District. The city is a powerhouse in biotechnology and pharmaceutical R&D, famously known as the birthplace of insulin and the stem cell, while currently leading the charge in regenerative medicine and cell and gene therapies. T
oronto’s academic research is fueled by the University of Toronto, consistently ranked among the top 10 globally for medical and health sciences, and supported by nine major teaching hospitals within the University Health Network (UHN). This dense concentration of clinical excellence fosters a unique environment for healthcare innovation, where AI-driven drug discovery startups like Deep Genomics and BenchSci thrive alongside global pharma giants like Sanofi and Johnson & Johnson. The MaRS Discovery District serves as a vital innovation hub, bridging the gap between laboratory breakthroughs and commercialization for high-growth medtech and digital health ventures.
Investors and talent are drawn to the region’s robust pipeline of clinical trials and its sophisticated medical device manufacturing sector, which includes leaders in surgical robotics and diagnostics.
Facilitated by initiatives like Life Sciences Central, the ecosystem offers seamless access to wet lab space, venture capital, and specialized talent. With a workforce of over 30,000 professionals, Toronto continues to define the future of personalized medicine and precision oncology.
