Canada is the world’s ninth-largest pharmaceutical market, generating $51.25 billion in annual sales and accounting for 2.1% of the global market. The country’s pharmaceutical sector is concentrated largely around Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Nationwide, Canada’s biotechnology ecosystem includes more than 1,000 companies, with many focused on pre-commercial research and development.
A 2026 report from Canada’s Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Sector Task Force identified early-stage discovery, platform technologies and academic-hospital research as Canadian strengths, while access to later-stage growth capital and commercialization remain key challenges.
British Columbia is home to more than 2,000 life sciences companies, collectively employing approximately 20,000 people and generating $5.4 billion in annual revenue. In 2025, the federal government announced $6 million and the Province of British Columbia allocated $10 million toward a new 30,000-square-foot adMare BioInnovations centre in Vancouver to help address a shortage of wet-lab space in the Lower Mainland. AbCellera: Phase II Data and Liquidity
AbCellera is a Vancouver-based biotechnology company with antibody discovery partnerships and an internal clinical pipeline.
In August 2026, the company reported positive topline Phase II results for ABCL635, an investigational antibody being studied for moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms, commonly known as hot flashes, associated with menopause. In the randomized study, a single dose met the primary efficacy endpoints for reductions in both the frequency and severity of moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms at week four compared with placebo.
Collaborations with Jazz Pharmaceuticals and Vertex Pharmaceuticals announced in 2026 are adding more than $100 million in combined upfront payments.
At the end of Q2 2026, AbCellera reported more than $565 million in cash and marketable securities, with total available liquidity exceeding $675 million, including available government funding.
Aspect Biosystems: Federal Investment and Expansion
Vancouver-based Aspect Biosystems develops bioengineered cellular medicines for metabolic and endocrine diseases.
The Government of Canada provided approximately $57 million (CAD$79 million) toward a roughly $203 million (CAD$280 million) multi-year project led by Aspect. The funding will go toward bioprinted tissue therapeutics and the expansion of Aspect’s clinical development and manufacturing capabilities in Vancouver.
The expansion will create 283 jobs and maintain 117 existing positions.
The project follows a previous approximately $145 million (CAD$200 million) co-investment involving Aspect and the federal and British Columbia governments announced in 2024.
Xenon Pharmaceuticals: Approaching an NDA Submission
Xenon Pharmaceuticals is a neuroscience-focused biotechnology company with operations in Vancouver and Boston. Its pipeline spans epilepsy, neuropsychiatric disorders and pain.
Xenon plans to submit a New Drug Application (NDA) for azetukalner, its lead candidate and investigational potassium channel opener for focal onset seizures, to the FDA in Q3 2026, following a pre-NDA meeting.
Phase III trials for azetukalner are continuing across epilepsy and neuropsychiatric indications.
As of June 30, 2026, Xenon reported approximately $1.2 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities.
Acuitas Therapeutics: Expanding RNA-LNP Capabilities
Vancouver-based Acuitas Therapeutics develops lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery technologies for nucleic acid therapeutics.
In January 2026, Acuitas acquired a majority stake in Montreal-based RNA Technologies & Therapeutics, a company focused on RNA design, optimization and manufacturing. The investment brings RNA design and manufacturing together with Acuitas’ LNP delivery capabilities. Financial terms were not disclosed.
At the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy (ASGCT) 2026 Annual Meeting, Acuitas presented preclinical research on targeted LNPs for in vivo CAR T-cell engineering, including work in nonhuman primates.
Eupraxia Pharmaceuticals: EP-104GI for Eosinophilic Esophagitis
Eupraxia Pharmaceuticals is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing Diffusphere, an extended-release drug delivery technology. The company has an office and laboratory in Vancouver, while its principal executive offices are located in Victoria.
Its lead investigational candidate, EP-104GI, is being evaluated for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Eupraxia has reported additional symptom-response data from its ongoing Phase Ib/IIa RESOLVE study.
The company completed a $63.2 million public offering in 2026 to support the clinical development of EP-104GI. Proceeds from the offering are intended to support Phase III clinical trial preparation, drug manufacturing activities and additional Phase II studies in gastrointestinal indications.
