    Description

Barcelona has solidified its position as a global life sciences hub, serving as a premier destination for pharmaceutical leaders and high-growth biotechnology startups.

The city is renowned for its healthcare innovation, fueled by a dense network of over 1,750 companies and 91 world-class research centers.

As a leader in clinical research, Barcelona ranks 5th in Europe for clinical trials, offering an unparalleled environment for drug development and advanced therapies, including CAR-T and gene editing.

The ecosystem is anchored by top-tier university hospitals like Hospital Clínic and Vall d'Hebron, which bridge the gap between academic research and clinical application.

In the medical device and medtech sectors, the region excels in 3D printing, robotic surgery and diagnostic imaging, supported by cutting-edge scientific facilities like the ALBA Synchrotron.

Barcelona is also at the forefront of the digital health revolution, with a booming startup scene focused on artificial intelligence, telemedicine and personalized medicine.

Global pharmaceutical giants such as AstraZeneca, Sanofi and Novartis have established strategic R&D hubs in the city, drawn by a highly skilled workforce and competitive operating costs.

The BioRegion of Catalonia continues to attract significant venture capital investment, particularly in oncology and rare diseases.

With the upcoming development of the BioCluster of Innovation and Health, Barcelona is set to further expand its capacity for large-scale biomanufacturing and sustainable healthcare solutions. This collaborative ecosystem makes the city a vital gateway for international companies seeking to scale within the European market.

    Government Funding

In 2023, institutes and research groups at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) mobilized ~$77 million in funding (including ~$63 million from public sources and ~$14 million from private capital) a 39.8% increase over 2022. Notable contributions included IRB Barcelona (~$39.9 million), IBEC (~$20.4 million), CNAG ($11.54 million) and IBMB-CSIC (~$5.71 million).

    VC Funding

Healthcare startups and scaleups in Catalonia raised nearly ~$385 million in 2024, the second-highest annual total on record. Barcelona is also positioned to benefit from a proposed ~$55 million to $110 million early-stage life sciences investment fund backed by public and private partners, including the European Investment Bank.

    Life Science Firms

Barcelona’s ecosystem includes more than 1,750 life sciences companies, of which about 550 are startups and scaleups, according to a 2023 report by CBRE. Foreign companies account for roughly 25% of sector turnover, reflecting the city’s growing role as a preferred location for international pharma and biotech operations.

    Big Pharma Presence

Catalonia hosts about 50% of Spain’s pharmaceutical industry, including 79 production plants, with most activity concentrated in Barcelona. Local leaders including Almirall, Grifols, Esteve, Ferrer, Reig Jofré, Bioiberica, Salvat and Werfen are also headquartered in Barcelona. Subsidiaries and R&D operations in Barcelona include AstraZeneca, Merck, Amgen, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Novartis, Pfizer, Roche and Sanofi.
